If you are anything like me, very likely you have went down the rabbit hole of trying to find a way to make extra… correction, millions of dollar pounds online, hopefully doing little to no work. Preferably zero work. Giving it all to find the method that seems too good to be true, resembling that sweetie that we could just eat and eat and never get diabetes. If the word Side Hustle resembles anything to you then you might wanna stick around as we will dig deep to find out where exactly this complex and extensive field of study originates from. I introduce to you; The Story of “SIDE HUSTLES”
Origin of Side Hustles
If you asked you granddad or grandparents what side hustles they did when they were younger they would blurt out an answer along the lines of “cleaning neighbors chimneys” or “flipping the hay”. Words “side” and “hustle” have existed for a long time but putting them together only started appearing in American vocabulary in the 1950’s. The truth is back then it was just a cool way of saying “second job” or “I’m sacrificing my spare time to make more money”. Unfortunately this also included the short dudes with a perm, pouch and Nike-tecs we see on the corner of the UK blocks, they are also hustling…Getting back on the topic, When the term was first used in the 50’s, it wasn’t widely adapted. The main problem was, our older folk actually had to go outside and complete these tasks using their arms, legs and destroying their backs for some extra dollar. If we open our rule book, doing physical meaningful labour doesn’t fly by undetected.
In books, the term was non-existent until it had a small spike in the early 2000’s and started to have steady growth around 2005. During this time, the meaning was very different. There were no influencers, TikToker, or amazon FBA 650$ a day. So how did Gen X’s back then managed to make money online with doing little to no work? It all started with one website called EBAY!
E-Commerce Rise UP!!!
EBay, launched back in 1995 opened up the pearly gates to online E-commerce enabling anyone to sell new or used good on their website around the world. Although it was a wild west back then with people selling used underwear and other substances, but people still found a way to make it work in their favor. The hot product back then was DVDs before the release of Napster, a file sharing website which disrupted the entertainment market due to people illegally spreading copyrighted content. One user reported selling DVDs between the year 2000 and 2003, what he would do when a title went out of print, he would phone up every single BORDERS shop in the USA and have them mail the last copies of the print. Which then he would flip them on eBay for around 10 times the price. Making 75k USD profit in a year!
Now that’s more like it, no chimney cleaning and making money in the comfort of your own room. But does it get better than this? This can’t be the only way people made money from side hustles! You would be right, there are quite a few ways that are still big industries like blogging or affiliate marketing or doing freelancing jobs from oDesk which is now more commonly knows as Upwork. Back then the computer security was also very weak and malicious SIDE HUSTLERS tried making money through spreading viruses and then offering virus removal software. GENIUS!!!
That era is way past the horizon and times have definitely changed, so lets check out the more recent ways people cracked to make retirement money.
FBA or Die Trying
Amazon an established online store that went from selling books to everything and anything, focusing on brand new high quality items. Quite the opposite to eBay! Investing 600 billion dollars in improving delivery and dispatching, launching the Fulfillment by Amazon program, FBA for short, enabling merchants to sell their product on the website, storing, packing and shipping your products and handling customer support and returns. The hype really started to pick up during the years of 2017 and 2018 with an influx of Amazon Gurus with claims of earning millions from this side hustle, they started creating courses on how you too can make millions with doing little to zero work.
One year later after the launch of the FBA program, a certain holy grail book for hustlers was released to the public by no other than Timothy Feriss. It goes by the name of the “4 Hour Work Week”, which is literally about how to make money and not work. All these new opportunities and information stirred up a fire so big that there was no way of putting it out. The side hustling world was growing exponentially and with no roof on the house, more millionaires were created online then ever before.
Social Media Money
SMMA stands for Social Media Marketing Agency which is a side hustle that has blew up in the past couple years due to big influencers and social media being consumed more than food. Old people went from watching propaganda TV at 7pm to watching Facebook reels and watching Doctors telling you why you should eat more Vitamin B12. How does it work? You are an agency as the name suggests you act as a middle man, a Company ran by a 60 year old man that doesn’t know how to set up a Facebook page, gives you 1000 dollars then you give 10 dollars to a kid in Ukraine to create some ads or run some SEO tools to drive more traffic to the company and increase sales. You keep the other 990 dollars because you probably live in Dubai and don’t pay tax. Bam easy money.
This niche has gotten so big its hard to call it a niche anymore. I have seen more videos of kids getting rich this way then kids running sim swap attacks at this point. As with all the side hustles the gurus did not miss out on this one either. From consulting to step by step guides and cold calling templates, it turned to another cash cow for both sides of the coin.
Conclusion
There is so many Side hustles I Skipped like AI automation Shorts Tiktok Shop sales but I want to spare your sanity and make sure you can sleep tonight. In my opinion all these ways of making money are very interesting and I definitely have not tried any of these… If you decide to try any of these, my advice would be just to pick one and stick with it for a long time. Its hard to recommend courses as they are usually over priced and hard to tell if they are a scam or actual advice. There is so much free information out there already that if you look hard you will find it without paying 5000 a month.
